Description

Trilliums
Three leaves, three green sepals, three colored petals, and (surround by six stamens) a three-chambered pistil topped by three spreading stigmas—these are the unmistakable marks of the trilliums, whose name comes from the Latin for "three." (Trilliums are also among the several spring-flowering plants known as wake robins.) Although the flowers of most species are self-pollinating, a certain amount of cross-pollination takes place, generally with the help of flies. The insects are attracted to the flowers' fetid odor—faint in such species are the Large White Trillium (Ontario's floral emblem) and strongest in the aptly named Stinking Benjamin.

What we have here is the Large White Trillium, which blooms on the eastern side of North America, and up into Canada. And, quite usefully, in the woods out behind my house. :)

I find it always fun to walk out in the wilderness, because you never know what you'll come across. Even right near this Trillium, I found a couple of Moccasin Flower buds getting ready to bloom (they're related to the Lady Slipper family, and are a government protected species.) So I'm hoping to go out in a couple more days and get some pictures of them as well.

Hope you enjoy!
